How to Play Pokémon Games on Your PC

Learn how to play Pokemon games using an emulator on your Windows computer. You can download Nintendo DS, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance versions of your favorite pokemon games for pc.

Downloading a ROM

  1. Open the Love Roms website. Go to https://www.loveroms.com/ in your computer’s browser.
  2. Click the search box. It’s the “Enter Keyword or ROM Title” box in the middle of the page.
  3. Type pokemon into the box. This is how you’ll find Pokemon titles on the site.
  4. Click Search. Doing so searches the site for all Pokemon-related games.
  5. Find a Pokemon game. Scroll through the results to find the Pokemon game that you want to download, making sure that any game that you find has either “Nintendo DS”, “Gameboy Color”, or “Gameboy Advance” listed as its platform on the right side of the page.
    Pay attention to the ratings for your selected game. There are often multiple versions of one Pokemon game, some of which are decent and some of which are not.
  6. Select a game. Click the Pokemon game that you want to download. This will open the game’s page.
  7. Uncheck the “Install LoveROMS Search Extension” box. It’s below the green DOWNLOAD NOW button on the game’s page.
  8. Click DOWNLOAD NOW. This is in the middle of the game’s page.
  9. Click START DOWNLOAD when prompted. Doing so will prompt the ROM to download. Once the ROM finishes downloading onto your computer, you can proceed with installing an emulator based on the platform for the ROM that you selected.

Using a Nintendo DS Emulator

  1. Find your computer’s bit number. In order to download the Nintendo DS emulator, you need to know whether your computer uses a 32-bit processor or a 64-bit processor.
  2. Open the DeSmuME page. Go to https://desmume.org/download/ in your browser. DeSmuME is a Nintendo DS emulator designed for both Windows and Mac computers.
  3. Select a download link. Beneath the “DeSmuME v0.9.11 Binaries for Windows” heading, click either Windows 32-bit (x86) (32-bit system) or Windows 64-bit (x86-64) (64-bit system). DeSmuME will begin downloading after a brief ad.
    You may need to click the direct link link if DeSmuME doesn’t begin downloading.
  4. Open the DeSmuME ZIP folder. Double-click the downloaded ZIP folder to do so.
  5. Click the Extract tab. It’s at the top of the window.
  6. Click Extract all. This option is on the right side of the Extract toolbar at the top of the window. Doing so opens a new window.
  7. Click Extract. It’s at the bottom of the new window. This will extract the contents of the ZIP folder and open them in a new, unzipped folder.
  8. Open DeSmuME. Double-click the DeSmuME application file to do so. The DeSmuME emulator will open.
    You may have to click Yes when prompted to confirm that you want to open DeSmuME.
  9. Click File. It’s a tab in the top-left corner of the DeSmuME window. A drop-down menu will appear.
  10. Click Open ROM…. This option is at the top of the drop-down menu.
  11. Select your downloaded ROM. Click the ROM that you downloaded. You may have to click the Downloads folder on the left-hand side of the window to find the ROM.
  12. Click Open. This will open the ROM in the Nintendo DS emulator, at which point your game should start.
    You can view a list of the emulator’s keyboard controls by clicking the Config tab and then clicking the Control Config option in the resulting drop-down menu.

Using a Gameboy Color Emulator

  1. Open the BGB page. Go to https://www.loveroms.com/emudownload/gameboy-color/bgb/63984 in your browser.
  2. Uncheck the “Install Yahoo Search Extension” box. It’s below the green DOWNLOAD NOW button in the middle of the page.
  3. Click DOWNLOAD NOW. This option is in the middle of the page.
  4. Click START DOWNLOAD when prompted. The BGB emulator’s ZIP folder will begin downloading onto your computer.
  5. Open the BGB ZIP folder. Double-click the ZIP folder to do so.
  6. Click the Extract tab. It’s at the top of the window.
  7. Click Extract all. This option is on the right side of the Extract toolbar at the top of the window. Doing so opens a new window.
  8. Click Extract. It’s at the bottom of the new window. This will extract the contents of the ZIP folder and open them in a new, unzipped folder.
  9. Double-click the bgb application. It resembles a grey and black directional pad. Doing so will open the BGB emulator window.
  10. Right-click the emulator window. A drop-down menu will appear.
    If your mouse doesn’t have a right-click button, click the right side of the mouse, or use two fingers to click the mouse.
    If your computer uses a trackpad instead of a mouse, use two fingers to tap the trackpad or press the bottom-right side of the trackpad.
  11. Click Load ROM…. It’s near the top of the drop-down menu.
  12. Select your downloaded ROM. Click the ROM that you downloaded. You may have to click the Downloads folder on the left-hand side of the window to find the ROM.
  13. Click Open. This will open the ROM in the Gameboy Color emulator, at which point your game should start.

Using a Gameboy Advance Emulator

  1. Open the VisualBoyAdvance website. Go to https://www.loveroms.com/emudownload/gameboy-advance/visualboyadvance172/64038 in your browser.
  2. Uncheck the “Install Yahoo Search Extension” box. It’s below the green DOWNLOAD NOW button in the middle of the page.
  3. Click DOWNLOAD NOW. This option is in the middle of the page.
  4. Click START DOWNLOAD when prompted. The VisualBoyAdvance ZIP folder will begin downloading onto your computer.
  5. Open the VisualBoyAdvance ZIP folder. Double-click the ZIP folder to do so.
  6. Click the Extract tab. It’s at the top of the window.
  7. Click Extract all. This option is on the right side of the Extract toolbar at the top of the window. Doing so opens a new window.
  8. Click Extract. It’s at the bottom of the new window. This will extract the contents of the ZIP folder and open them in a new, unzipped folder.
  9. Double-click VisualBoyAdvance. This purple icon is in the new window. Doing so opens the VisualBoyAdvance program.
  10. Click the File tab. It’s in the upper-left corner of the VisualBoyAdvance window. A drop-down menu will appear.
  11. Click Open…. This option is near the top of the drop-down menu.
  12. Select your downloaded ROM. Click the ROM that you downloaded. You may have to click the Downloads folder on the left-hand side of the window to find the ROM.
  13. Click Open. This will open the ROM in the Game Boy Advance emulator, at which point your game should start.
