The Wii Shop Channel is closing in 2019, here’s everything you need to know!

The Wii Shop Channel is an online shop for the Wii video game console that allows users to download Virtual Console games, WiiWare games, and additional channels. Downloading may require redeeming Wii Points. The channel launched with Wii on November 19, 2006. Available software is currently organized into three sections: Virtual Console, WiiWare, and Wii Channels.

Presently succeeded by the Nintendo eShop, the Wii Shop Channel still remains accessible on the Wii U console via Wii Mode, supporting the download of most WiiWare titles, as well as most legacy, Wii-based Virtual Console titles, consequently allowing users to continue purchasing/downloading many Virtual Console titles that are yet to be available via the Nintendo eShop.

It was announced on September 29, 2017, that Nintendo plans to discontinue the Wii Shop Channel on January 31, 2019, with the purchase of Wii points ending on March 26, 2018.

Reminder regarding the Wii Shop Channel closure

As previously announced, in 2019, we plan to close the Wii Shop Channel on Wii and Wii U, which has been available since December 2006.

In preparation for the closure of the Wii Shop Channel, we would like to remind consumers of the following points:

  • It will no longer be possible to add Nintendo Points with either a credit card, a Nintendo Points Card or a Nintendo eShop Card after 20:59 UK time on 26th March 2018. If you’d like to purchase Nintendo Points or redeem a Nintendo Points Card or Nintendo eShop Card, please do so before this time.
  • It will no longer be possible to purchase WiiWare, Virtual Console software and Wii Channels (including free software)* in the Wii Shop from 05:59 UK time on 31st January 2019.
